Petrissage Massage Therapy, Inc.
Professional Therapeutic Massage for Animals and their People

What is Petrissage?

  • "Petrissage" is the name of a traditional Swedish massage stroke. The stroke consists of lifting and kneading motions used to free up muscle restrictions and increase local circulation.
  • "Petrissage" also refers to a service providing therapeutic massage treatments to animals in the Denver area. Each treatment is performed by Mara Tingley, a Nationally Certified Massage Therapist and Certified Veterinary Technician. Treatments are tailored to the animal's individual needs.

Massage Therapy for animals?

Massage therapy for animals is thought to be a recent development in the field; it has actually been around for thousands of years. In fact, it has most likely been practiced as long as massage itself. The Ancient Greeks are thought to have massaged both the warriors and the horses before engaging in battle. More recently, in 1976, the U.S. Olympic Equestrian team chose to employ a massage therapist to work on their riders and on their horses. They won the gold medal that year.

Despite the common idea that animal massage is only for "pampering" animals, the practice is becoming more mainstream as a complement to traditional veterinary medical care. Today, massage therapy services can be found in veterinary offices and animal rehabilitation hospitals in addition to daycare and animal spa facilities.
